Traffic in Ulaanbaatar

The traffic here never ceases to amaze me! I have to reprogram my little mind in order to get across the street to go to our office or to go anywhere for that matter.  To cross the street, if your want to get there before 2 weeks are up, you wait for a little break one way, walk to the middle of the road and then either walk between cars or run between spaces of the cars.  It is actually safer sometimes to jay walk and cross in the middle of the road than to cross on the corners with the cross walks.  The drivers do not yield to pedestrians in cross walks so if you cross at a corner you have to watch all sides front, back, left and right because someone will always be turning into you.Alvin is suppose to get  a driver's license whenever he gets his alien card.  I really feel sometimes that it is just as fast to walk as it is to drive.  You can sit for hours in a car trying to go someplace because of the congestion.  They are trying to lower the congestion by having your car not available to drive one day by the number of your license plate.  It doesn't seem to be working very well.
I am amazed that I haven't seen more accidents.  The drivers cut into any little space they can find. They will make a 2 lane road into a 6 lane road by crowding as close together as they can to try to get the traffic going.
